Matt Smith

Lead Oil Analyst, Americas, Kpler

Matt started his career at Royal Bank of Canada in London, England, working his way up to portfolio manager in the investment management team.

Jonathan Leitch

Director of Commodity Research

Jonathan Leitch is a member of Kpler’s Insight team in charge of client liaison.He is a recognised industry expert with over 30 years of experience in the crude oil and refined product markets. He has worked in trading, shipping and broking for companies including Shell and RWE.Jonathan moved into research and analysis in 2005, working for FGE, Wood Mackenzie and Turner, Mason & Company.He joined Kpler in 2022 to take the lead on cementing relationships between the analyst team and our clients, helping to bring reputable insights to the commodity community by harnessing Kpler’s considerable array of proprietary data.

Daan Struyven

Head of Oil Research Global Investment Research - Goldman Sachs

Daan is head of Oil Research within Global Investment Research. Prior to leading the firm’s research on oil markets, he co-led research on the global economy for three years, led the firm's economics research effort for Canada and worked in the US economics group for five years. Daan joined Goldman Sachs in 2015 and was named managing director in 2021. Earlier in his career, Daan worked as an economist at the World Bank. He was also a guest lecturer at Yale University, Columbia University and Universite Libre de Bruxelles. Daan's work has been published in several academic journals, including the American Economic Journal: Policy and the Journal of Banking and Finance. Daan earned a BA in Political Science and Business Engineering and an MA in Business Engineering from the Universite Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium. He also earned a PhD in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2015.

Andrew Spomer

Commodities Analyst - Castle Hook

Andrew Spomer is an analyst at Castle Hook focusing on commodities. Prior to joining Castle Hook, he was a private equity associate at ECP, where he concentrated on investments in the oil & gas and energy transition sectors. He started his career at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in the Natural Resources Investment Banking group.

John Calvaruso, CFA

Senior Director - LS Power

John is a senior portfolio manager at LS Power Development, sitting on the proprietary trading desk, where he deploys risk across a variety of markets, with a specific focus on crude oil, refined products, and macro. He is also responsible for creating and evolving the factor-based risk model used at the company for trading positions including crude oil, refined products, natural gas, equity investments, and power. The majority of John’s career was spent in the Investment Management Division of Goldman Sachs serving as a risk taker in cross-asset and commodity long / short strategies for over a decade. Prior to that time, John was a fixed income and alternatives portfolio manager, where his primary responsibilities were portfolio optimization, hedging, and risk allocation for a suite of internally-managed hedge fund strategies. John worked at Goldman Sachs since the beginning of his career in 2002. John graduated from the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University, where he was a member of the Honors Program. He graduated summa cum laude with a BS in both Finance and Accounting in 2002. John earned his Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 2005 and is a member of the New York Society of Security Analysts.
