Latest Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) forecasts continue to point to a hotter-than-normal summer, maintaining a 60% probability of above-average temperatures through July–August. Reflecting the stronger August heat outlook, Kpler Insight has raised its August cooling degree day (CDD) forecast to ~377 degree days and increased its 2026 Japan LNG demand forecast by 0.2 mt to 65.1 mt. While national LNG inventories remain adequate, tighter regional balances in Tokyo, where implied inventories are projected to fall to around 1.2 mt (~40%) through July–August, are expected to support localized spot procurement. Together, stronger cooling demand and Tokyo's tighter LNG balance should provide modest support to Asian LNG prices during Q3.
Latest JMA forecasts maintain a 60% probability of above-average temperatures across Japan through July–August, with the strongest heat expected in August across central and western Japan. Kpler Insight has therefore raised its August population-weighted CDD forecast to ~377 degree days, supporting stronger gas-fired generation during the peak cooling season.
The hotter weather outlook is expected to tighten LNG balances in the Tokyo region, where implied inventories are forecast to decline to around 1.2 mt (~40%) through July–August, supporting localized spot procurement. National inventories, however, remain adequate to meet summer demand, limiting broader Japanese spot buying.
Accordingly, Kpler Insight has increased its 2026 Japan LNG demand forecast by 0.2 mt to 65.1 mt, equivalent to approximately 2–3 additional LNG cargoes concentrated in Q3. At the same time, Japan LNG import costs (JLC) are forecast to rise to $14.88/MMBtu by August as higher Japan Crude Cocktail (JCC)-linked contract prices feed through with a 3–5-month lag. Together, stronger seasonal demand, regional tightness in Tokyo, and higher contract costs should provide modest support to Asian LNG prices, although comfortable national inventories should keep Pacific Basin balances broadly well supplied.
